    1. 24 is determined by finding the largest multiple of 8 that is smaller than the total number of valence electrons found previously. In this example, the total number of electrons is 26, so the largest multiple of 8 less than 26 is 24, and 24=8*3. This means that there are 3 surrounding atoms around the central atom of this compound.
